HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Formerly inhabited by the Agawam Indians, Charles I included the land that is Manchester-by-the-sea in a 1629 grant to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The town was not formally incorporated until 1645. By 1700, the settlers were able to officially buy the land from the tribe. The townspeople were rather progressive in their legislation, even outlawing slavery and cruelty to animals in the mid-1600s.
Early on, fishing and seafaring took hold as the two top industries. At the height of the bustling period for the fishing industry, Manchester operated a fishing fleet, fully functioning fishing yards and fish storage warehouses. Fishing eventually gave way to woodworking and cabinet making.
In 1845, a new era for the town began after the first summer home was built by poet Richard Dana. Before long, additional homes popped up and soon Manchester became a favorite summer spot for the area's wealthy families. Presidents and other prestigious leaders were among those that vacationed here. A collection of historical photos can be

The nickname Manchester-by-the-sea began in order to distinguish the town from the many other Manchesters in England. The name stuck and remains the informal name of the town.
